Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Bill Gates, co-chair of the U.S. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to exchange views on enhancing public health service, improving people’s health and accelerating poverty alleviation. Xi emphasized that China attaches great importance to and has been making persistent efforts on poverty alleviation and relief. Xi also said China will take an active part in the post-2015 UN development agenda to work with the international community and make new progress on poverty alleviation. Gates also expressed his will to further strengthen cooperation with China in terms of public health.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met with Takehiko Nakao, President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) at the Great Hall of the People, and expressed his hope that the ADB play a bigger role in promoting poverty alleviation and development in the Asia-Pacific region. Li said that ADB’s support for China’s economic and social development, poverty alleviation, participation in regional economic cooperation and others is much appreciated. As the biggest developing country, China is willing to continue promoting the cooperative partnership with the ADB. Takehiko Nakao said that the ADB has long been an active participant in China’s reform and opening-up course and has also obtained important support from China. The ADB admires China’s achievements in development and poverty alleviation and believes that China’s experience is beneficial to the global development.

Guizhou Province lifted 1.22 million people out of poverty in 2014. By the end of 2014, Guizhou Province had completed its proposed goal of lifting 1.22 million people out of poverty and helping 159 poverty-stricken villages and towns from 11 impoverished counties shake off poverty.

All villages and towns in contiguous destitute counties in Gansu Province now have access to kindergartens. Gansu Province has carried out the Three-Year Action Plan for Pre-school Education for two consecutive sessions since 2011. Up till now, a total of 1,616 kindergartens have been built, rebuilt or extended in villages and towns, including 1,213 in poverty-stricken counties within the province. As a result, all villages and towns in contiguous destitute counties now have access to kindergartens. During the first session of the Action Plan, the gross kindergarten enrollment ratio reached 70%, up by 28 percentage points compared with 2011.

109,500 impoverished people in Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province were lifted out of poverty in 2014. According to poverty monitoring statistics, rural residents living below the poverty line of 2,300 yuan (annual average net income per capita) in the prefecture was reduced from 826,000 at the end of 2013 to 716,500 at the end of 2014, a total of 109,500 impoverished people were lifted out of poverty.

Gansu Province as a result of the concentrated poverty alleviation efforts. Impoverished population in Wuwei was reduced from 560,700 in 2011 to 228,200 in 2014, lowering the poverty rate from 35.4% to 15.4%, a total of over 330,000 people were lifted out of poverty.

Poverty alleviation work in Jiangxi Province sets a good example for other places in China with 700,000 people lifted out of poverty last year. In 2014, the number of registered impoverished population in Jiangxi Province dropped from 3,460,000 in the previous year to 2,760,000, reduced by 700,000.

The government of Shandong Province will appropriate another 30 million yuan to support the federations of trade unions at all levels to assist model workers and employees that are in need. The fund will be used in various activities conducted by the federations of trade unions, such as heart-warming activities, education assistance activities, workmate business-starting actions, and migrant workers assistance actions. National and provincial model workers with low income or significant misfortunes will be granted access to life subsidies and special subsidies.
